Several other types of carbohydrate containing foods are important. Whole grains are preferable to processed grains. They are rich in fiber as well as starch and often provide more nutrients than their processed counterpart. For example, brown rice supplies more fiber and minerals than white rice. Whole grains also improve eating satisfaction. Fruits and vegetables supply phytochemicals, fiber, vitamins, and minerals. Most are low-energy-density foods that are naturally low in fat and higher in fiber. Low-fat dairy foods like nonfat milk and yogurt offer a rich array of important nutrients like calcium and protein.
