As parts of the continent were colonized by Europeans and other African tribes, most nomadic or hunter-gatherer tribes became confined to small plots of nutrient-depleted, overused land. Much of their farming and gathering areas were taken over by large-scale agriculture, and whole countries began to produce one or two high-yield crops rather than the dozens of indigenous varieties that were previously cultivated. As a consequence, many of the native seeds and nutritious indigenous foods were lost, leaving millions of Africans to suffer from malnutrition.
